NENSA prepares for U.S. Ski & Snowboard Virtual REG Camp

June 17, 2020 by Justin Beckwith

On Monday evening June 22nd NENSA and U.S. Ski & Snowboard will partner to host the first virtual Regional Elite Group (REG) camp for 34 athletes from the Eastern region.  The concept of a virtual camp experience was born from necessity as our current health crisis does not allow for groups to safely gather.  Although we would all rather be able to host an in person camp – the reality of a virtual camp allows the broader New England (and beyond) community to see what a REG camp entails, both through shared training plans and standardized testing.  Many clubs will participate alongside their nominated athletes and anyone can gain access to the training plan and testing by signing up for NENSA’s #JuneTerm event.

2018 REG Uphill Running Test Start. Whiteface Mountain, NY.

Athletes were invited to the camp based on NENSA Elite and Development Team criteria, Junior National ranking and nomination by the Mid-Atlantic division.  Throughout six days of training these athletes will be coached by US Ski Team staff, Ski Team athlete alums as well as regional club leaders.  Training and testing will be introduced via prerecorded video and interactive conference calls.

Male Participants: Aidan Burt, Brian Bushey, Caden Cote, Clint Macy, Fin Bailey, Finn Sweet, Isaac Freitas-Eagan, Jack Christner, Jack Lange, Jack Young, Linden Niedeck, Luke Streinz, Quinn Wilson, Sam Murray, Trey Jones

Female Participants: Amelia Tucker, Ava Thurston, Callie Young, Camille Bolduc, Elsa Bolinger, Emma Strack, Emma Charles, Evelyn Walton, Maggie McGee, Mica Bodkins, Nina Seemann, Phoebe Sweet, Quincy Massey-Bierman, Sammie Nolan, Shea Brams, Sofia Scirica, Hattie Barker, Rose Clayton and Sophia Kelting.

Success in this distanced environment requires self reliance and creativity – both themes that will be conveyed to the athletes – and that were essential to create the framework in which regional leaders came together to create national standardized testing.  Athletes will be challenged with a 3000 meter running test (ideally on a track), a 1000 meter SkiErg test and the Canadian Strength Test protocol.  These metrics along with individual placement on the National Ranking List will allow for comparison among athletes throughout the United States.  It also creates the potential for advancement to further U.S. Ski Team camps – namely the National Elite Group (NEG) which typically attends a camp in the fall alongside the National Training Group (NTG) and members of the U.S. Ski Team.

Stay tuned for updates about REG and the final week or #JuneTerm.  NENSA is proud of our athletes achievements and is dedicated to furthering their potential.  Despite the challenges we all face we are determined to meet this challenge and come back to the new normal stronger than ever!

2018 Eastern REG Camp & Olympic Day Recap

July 6, 2018 by Tom Weir Leave a Comment

Last Tuesday morning in Lake Placid, New York, 46 athletes toed the line for an uphill run test on Whiteface Mountain. The workout was part of our annual Eastern REG camp and would be a grueling uphill grind in the late June sunshine. The camp brought skiers together from New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, Massachusetts, and New York for a week of training with an all star cast of coaches and guests, all hosted by the Northwood School, right in the heart of Lake Placid.

A few hours later, when the test was over and the skiers had recovered, they gathered for presentations from a group of former Olympians including Andy Newell, Dorcas Denhartog, Tim Burke, and Andrew Johnson. It was an inspiring afternoon and the Olympians drew from their experiences to pass on some expert wisdom to the next generation of skiers.  Four time Olympic biathlete Tim Burke told the athletes to dream big, make every day count, and to ask questions. He stressed that the best athletes always wanted to learn more about their sport.

Johnson spoke of finding his own path in the world, and not feeling constrained by what others might think is the right trajectory. He told the campers that they were ahead of the curve already compared to where he was at their age, and complimented their level of dedication and focus.

Dorcas Denhartog gave a heartfelt presentation and spoke her love of skiing and the family bonds that can be strengthened by our sport. She told the campers of her father and how he became both student of the sport, and her biggest fan when she was competing. He collected Olympic pins when he traveled to watch her at the winter games. After the Olympic Day celebration she passed out a pin from his collection to each of the campers, saying “I could think of no better way to make sure that that passion was passed on than to share his pins with New England’s aspiring Olympians. I had no idea if the skiers would understand, or if they would want a pin from a ski event that happened before cell phones. But I’d like to think that wherever that pin goes, it will add a little tug to the heart of that skier, inspire and empower them to follow their passion.”

Though the Olympians came from different backgrounds there was a commonality in their message that US Ski Team development coach Bryan Fish summed up as “push yourself toward bigger goals than you think you might be able to achieve, make each day count because experiences pass by faster than you think,  take the opportunity to learn about yourself and your sport each and every day- and last – enjoy the amazing people within our great sports. These people will be friends for life.”

It was a truly special celebration of personal and athletic history with amazing energy that carried over into the rest of the week’s training schedule.

The following days included technique work, movement education, an epic long run/hike, and a fast paced agility course that kept the skiers on their toes and thinking one step ahead. It was exciting to see the dedication and enthusiasm of these young athletes as they drew inspiration from their coaches and each other to make the camp a success. Andy Newell joined the camp as both a coach and an athlete, taking part in all of the trainings alongside the campers, and offering unique insight into his years on the World Cup. He commented that he was impressed with the “fitness and athleticism of these young skiers” and later told us that ” because of this new athlete/coach relationship we were able to accomplish so much more together in a short period of time. The future of Eastern junior skiing is looking bright!”

Dorcas praised Andy’s presence at the camp, telling us that “His position now is going to be a key link of communication and understanding between the national team and our REG skiers. The skiers were able to make the connection between the legendary Newell they know about through the media, and the real person they met at the camp, who was once like them.”

NENSA Would like to thank the Northwood School, NYSEF, the Lake Placid Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) and all the amazing coaches who helped make this week possible. Below we have included a few photos from the week, as well as a video of camper Ben Ogden rocking our agility course, and videos of the double pole test Scroll to the bottom of the post for results from the Agility Test, Uphill Run Test, and the Double Pole Test.

GREEN MOUNTAIN VALLEY SCHOOL XC SUMMER DRYLAND CAMP 2020-21

Hello All!

I hope this email finds you healthy, strong and still able to “dream skiing” in spite of the challenges that may seem to lie in our way. Fortunately, for all of us in the “Cross Country Ski Family”, our sport exists outdoors in the forests and in the fields verus indoors in pools and arenas and we will always be able to glide, in fresh air, effortlessly over the snow! Our sport will continue, and possibly even grow through this adversity so, no matter what, continue to stay positive and keep pursuing excellence on XC skis!

In preparation for the 2020-21 race season we still plan to hold our GMVSxc Summer Dryland Camp, although it will look different than in years past.

As with any activity, this camp will come with inherent challenges and risks. We are, therefore, following guidance from the State of Vermont, the Center for Disease Control as well as U.S. Ski & Snowboard and employing recommended risk mitigation strategies.

This year, the GMVSxc Summer Dryland Camp will be a DAY CAMP only from Wednesday, August 5th through Sunday, August 9th.

-If you still can join us, but live too far away for day commuting there are people that are considering local Mad River Valley rental options. Please let me know if this is something you are considering and I hope we can help to connect athletes and families. Camp cost will be reduced.

-Camp will run from 8:30 AM-5 PM each day and we will have 2-3 training sessions Wed-Sat. Sunday will be a final Over Distance Training Day to conclude camp.

-Camp size will be limited to 25- coaches and athletes total.

-Lunches will be provided.

-All campers must adhere to the following VT STATE GUIDELINES for overnight camps AND quarantine as necessary even though this is a Day Camp. Please Review!

-All staff and athletes will undergo a health review temperature check and health check multiple times each day and all will need to sign a COVID Release Waiver. Any camper showing symptoms of illness will be isolated and will be required to depart camp as soon as possible.

-Indoor activities will be limited to the Racing Performance Center weight room in small groups.

-Staff members will provide transportation to local training venues in vans at limited capacities. Athletes will be assigned seats in vans  AND vehicles will be sanitized daily.

-All coaches/staff and athletes will be required to have masks on hand and to wear them at specified times and in various locations.

-The majority of our time will be spent outside training and finding our GRIT in the Mad River Valley- all on roads, trails and mountain sides!

Please let me know if you will still join us! CAMP WILL BE CHALLENGING, FUN AND ENGAGING all with the goal of fostering a passion for the sport of Cross Country Skiing while teaching you to be fast on your skis this winter!!

Development Camps and Rollerski Programming Update

April 8, 2020 by Justin Beckwith

NENSA is proud to continue celebrating the athletic accomplishments of this winter by introducing the 2020 Elite and Development Team nominations and give you some updates looking into the future.  While we don’t know our exact calendars for the next few months we do know that our skiers are healthy and will be resilient to whatever challenges they face.  We will best navigate this important moment by staying calm and optimistic.

  1. The criteria set forth to name the NENSA Elite and Development Team represent a pathway to regional, national and international success.  The number of athletes named to these teams each year demonstrates the depth of the Eastern region in cross country skiing.  Athletes named to these teams are invited to regional training camps and races, and part of a broader team that continues to excel at all levels.  Further Elite Team / Development Team information.

2)  From Bryan Fish, U.S. Ski & Snowboard, Cross Country Sport Development Manager:

“Winter 19-20 was once again historic in year.  Thank you for being such an integral part of this success.  I am reaching out to provide U.S. Ski & Snowboard insight for the upcoming summer camp season during this time of uncertainty.  Our first goal is to ensure health and safety of our whole ski community.  We also want to continue to motivate and engage our up-and-coming cross country skiers.  Our REG, National U16, NEG, and NTG camps are a critical opportunity to do motivate, engage, and progress our junior athletes.

Covid-19 continues to spread across the USA.  More states are implementing mandatory stay-at-home policies in an effort to slow the spread of this pandemic.  We will return to normalcy, however it is challenging at this current time to know when that will be.  We would like to propose the following guidance:

We are anticipating normalcy will return at or before late July/August, therefore we are planning (hoping) that National junior camps in late July and August can remain as scheduled.  Please note that we have received notification (below) that the 2020 Equinor International Junior Camp (IJC) in Norway is scheduled to be held.  Norway will re-evaluate the decision to host in early June (as outlined in the invite below).  We would like to keep this camp a part of our development pathway by participating in this every other year.  We had planned on taking part in the IJC camp prior to Covid-19 and we hope to maintain this plan.

Our guidance is that we should wait to schedule Regional Elite Group camps.  Initial regional planning of REG should take place with a the understanding that dates are tentative.  We propose re-evaluating REG dates on May 1st and determine if normal REG dates (mid-June through early-July) are appropriate OR if REG camps should be postponed and held later in summer – immediately before U16 camp, during U16 camp, or possibly in August.  U.S. Ski & Snowboard/ USST staffing would do its best to support REG, however we believe each region is highly capable of hosting a great camp without  U.S. Ski & Snowboard/ USST if necessary.  That said, we feel that creative options should be considered such as multiple REG camps held on the same dates.

PROPOSED PLAN:

  • Regional Elite Camp dates: re-evaluate appropriate dates to host REG camps May 1st.  Have later dates considered in advance of May 1st.
  • June NTG  Park City, UT June 7-14th – re-evaluate feasibility to host this camp on May 1st (recognize this camp might be cancelled due to Covid-19)
  • 2020 National U16 Camp is slated to be held in Sun Valley, Idaho July 18-25
  • 2020 Equinor International Junior Camp – (Lillehammer, NOR Aug 7-14) (USA – 2weeks – Aug 2-14)

Thank you for your continued hard work, patience, and persistence in keeping our athletes safe, healthy, and motivated. “

Bryan

Below is the information regarding the National U16 Camp Selections for 2020. The calculations  were determined using the posted U16 selection procedures with the  exception that only the first two races were able to be utilized for scoring. In some ways, though we were fortunate in that we had one race in each technique.  Remember that a skier can score either their prelim or their final result from the sprint but not both.

3)  Our 2020 Rollerski Programming is currently in a holding pattern as we want to ensure the safety of our community before trying to publish dates for programming.  We are optimistic we will be able to offer clinics, club outreach opportunities and competition before or during the fall.  We can’t wait to share exciting events with our population again and will be in touch with updates as soon as they are available.

  • You can look forward to a “how to build” a bicycle ramp video in the coming weeks – so find carpenter / builder in the and we can help build some fun remotely.
