NENSA Waxing Policy

November 5, 2019 by Justin Beckwith

Mission Statement:  NENSA is committed to making safe and supportive competitive events for all cross country skiers.

As of June 15th, 2020 all NENSA sanctioned events will abide by U.S. Ski & Snowboard and FIS guidelines and be fluoro free (see link directly below).  Due to the pandemic climate and the continued development of fluoro detection equipment there will be limited physical regulation possible this season.  We respectfully ask of our competitors and technicians that they comply with the spirit of this regulation which is intended to protect the health of our environment and community.

US Ski & Snowboard Policy  (Updated June 15, 2020)

NENSA Recommendations:

  • Simplify your wax boxes – learn a brand(s) and trust your process.  Add complexity as you see fit and that your staff can handle without limiting coaching interaction.  New fluoro free products are already available to the public and developing quickly.
  • Wear a respirator or at least a dust mask whenever you are glide waxing: If you are working with any type of glide wax, there are likely fumes and particulates in the air that you do not want in your lungs. Even when scraping and brushing, wear a dust mask to protect your airways.
  • Collect your wax shavings and contain your dust: Wax waste must be collected in waste containers and disposed of in waste containers properly. All waste material should be disposed of in waste containers on site.  Do not brush your wax scrapings on the ground.

Bill Koch Youth Ski League Policy (updated 12/2021)

In an effort to lessen the cost barrier and to keep the focus more on skiing rather than on waxing at the Bill Koch Youth Ski League  (BKYSL) level, the BKYSL District Chair Committee has voted to only allow basic flouro-free block/hot wax or liquid paraffin wax at Eastern BKYSL ski races including the Festival. Please see the following list of allowed Swix and Toko flouro-free block/hot wax and liquid paraffins. Please note that equivalent flouro-free base line block/hot waxes and liquid paraffins from other wax companies are also allowed despite not being listed below. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in following this new guidance.

Swix Performance Speed (PS) Block Wax Line (formerly the CH line)
Swix CH liquid line
Toko Base Performance liquid paraffin
Toko Base Performance Hot Wax
And equivalent base line block/hot waxes and liquid paraffins from other wax companies
