Spectacular Rollerski Weekend in Lake Placid

Justin Beckwith · September 28, 2023 ·

There is always magic in the air in Lake Placid — last weekends doubleheader rollerski weekend highlighted two impressive venues and the enthusiasm for cross country skiing in the East. Saturday boasted several of the top skiers in the world competing along side developing junior and senior athletes, in the third Keys to the Castle, a sprint race that includes agility features in the starting corridors. Sunday, the 16th running of the Climb to the Castle drew a stellar crew of 87 competitors, who gracefully ascended the Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway on the clearest weather day many can remember.

The Keys to the Castle

Competitors raced an individual qualification, which determined placement in open gender Court Sprint Heats, where they contested three rounds of head-to-head competition. Each starting lane included a bicycle ramp which complemented the challenging terrain of Mt Van Hoevenberg’s homologated 1.4km sprint course. Many of the athletes are becoming quite familiar with this terrain, that will be used for a combined Eastern Cup / SuperTour this winter and the 2024 Junior National Championship.

Ben Ogden (SMST2/USST), the top ranked U23 in the world, put on a show and remained clear of the field the entire day — a place he has become accustomed to here in Lake Placid. Julia Kern (SMST2/USST), the seventh ranked sprinter in the world, returned to the Keys for the second time, qualifying 12th overall and spent the day racing in the third and fourth rounds. At the end of the day, she took the top step of the women’s podium, one step higher than she was in 2021 when she was second to Jessie Diggins.

While the top of the field might seem otherworldly, this event highlights the continuity of programing and the opportunity rollerski racing allows skiers in the East to have throughout the year. Open heats were run on three minute intervals, creating interesting dynamics — in many cases one heat had not finished before the next began — and making for nonstop action for the competitors and spectators alike. Junior skiers from NYSEF, Gould and Mansfield Nordic were out in force along with Paul Smith’s College and independent racers from the Eastern US and Canada. And those stars who now grace the headlines? They where competing in these events only a few years ago — that is not lost on the coaches and athletes and provides immense motivation!

The Climb to the Castle

The Climb to the Castle was created in 2006 by Margaret Maher who was at the time the New York Ski Education Foundation’s (NYSEF) Head Coach — and it has run continuously with the exception of 2020 when it wasn’t hosted because of Covid. Over many of those years much of the press has been about the memorable battles between national team members from cross country, biathlon and Nordic Combined as well as an always present masters field. Over the past few years NYSEF and NENSA have worked to make the challenging course a more level playing field — enter a matched fleet of Swenor rollerskis for top ranked skiers, and more inclusive — with options for both a short course and a classic division.

There is no doubt the top of the field was present again this year, with Jack Lange, who now attends Dartmouth College and Julia Kern taking the overall victories. Their stories tell a similar tale to the Keys. Lange had last skied the event in 2019 when he caught a ride near the finish from that year’s winner, Kyle Bratrud, “after he caught me from seven minutes back!” Kern remarked it had been ten years since she last attended the Climb as a junior with CSU. In their post race interviews they both proudly reflected on the incremental gains they have made over those years as they gazed down the mountain.

While two-thirds of this years field were 20 years old or younger, there were two amazing participants, James Meier (Manhattan Nordic/Ford Sayre) and King Milne (CVU) who topped the 2300 foot climb at the spry age of 79! Local, Will Preece of NYSEF was the youngest competitor, who attacked the short course with a smile and excellent technique.

The NYSEF staff put on an outstanding event with aid stations along the way and food for competitors at the summit. Progress on the ongoing Castle construction at the summit allowed for an intimate awards ceremony where likeminded skiers and families gathered to share their journey and dream of the winter to come!

Roger Arsenault Receives NENSA’s 2023 John Caldwell Award

Heidi Lange · September 19, 2023 ·

One of NENSA’s finest traditions is presenting the John Caldwell Award.  This award annually recognizes a single individual, or entity, which embodies the spirit, dedication, innovation, and pride of John Caldwell. NENSA is thrilled to announce that Roger Arsenault of Chisholm Ski Club is the recipient of the 2023 John Caldwell Award.

Roger with his wife, Barbara, at Black Mountain of Maine

Roger hails from the River Valley in Maine, a community firmly rooted in the history and tradition of skiing in the United States. An alpine skier in high school, he left to attend Maine Maritime Academy, but returned and has been deeply invested in the community since. A board member of Chisholm Ski Club since 1985, Chairman of the Black Mountain of Maine board of directors, and CSC Race Director, Roger has played an instrumental role in the operations of the venue, the programming, and innumerable events ranging from a Bill Koch League festival to Junior Olympics to U.S. Nationals and NCAA Championships.

NENSA Competitive Programs Director Justin Beckwith shares, “When something needs to be done at Black Mountain you will likely hear, “Where’s Roger?” over the radio.  A humble guy who can and does seemingly do everything — when running events in Rumford you will talk to Roger from start to finish.  Last winter the folks at Chisholm pulled off a miracle, hosting the largest Eastern Cup of the year despite minimal snowmaking and a lousy forecast.  They did so with belief in their plan and a little luck — pulling off the races with an unconventional trail arrangement.  In doing so they provided an experience for a new generation that harkens back to the roots of cross country skiing, rather than wide and perfectly groomed corridors they are becoming accustomed to, something that I’m sure John Caldwell would appreciate.  They also provided a festive atmosphere with the local community present and a budding Bill Koch club there to take in the magic.  It was a real honor and experience to help set tracks with Roger before the sprint race with a trying surface, one I won’t forget.”

“My favorite part about Roger is that he embodies the spirit of building a community,” says Justin Easter, FIS TD and long-time community member. “His company has community in its name, but I honestly think Roger wholeheartedly believes in the amazing things possible when you start together. I am so happy this award is his this year, and I’m confident he will be helping inspire another recipient down the road.”

Erin Haynes, board member of the Chisholm Ski Club and beloved Bill Koch coach shared in her nomination, “Roger goes above and beyond for CSC and BMOM.  He attends meetings, works behind the scenes, coordinates many events, and times and even grooms and sets tracks for our youth development program every Sunday morning.  He is an advocate for community, making programs accessible, and works tirelessly on supporting and improving outreach and programming.  He was recently inducted into the Maine Ski Hall of Fame and our club is proud to call him one of our own, and best.”

Over her 29 year tenure as Head Coach of Bates College Nordic Ski Team, Becky Woods worked with Roger in hosting many EISA Carnival events. “Roger has been a steadfast supporter of cross country skiing in Maine for as long as I can remember,” shares Becky. “His calming presence and can-do attitude was always a comfort when it came to making sure the races were going to go off as planned, weather or no weather! His partnership with the Bates team is something I am forever grateful for. The team continues to be so excited to bring the EISA teams to race on their home course and compete on what we consider to be one of the best courses in New England!”

“Roger Arsenault is like the Energizer bunny. He just keeps going, and going, and going,” writes Chisholm Ski Club Secretary, Terry Richard. “On race day, he is usually the first one at the mountain and the last one to leave. He has single handedly made an enormous impact on the economy in the River Valley area through his leadership and commitment to Black Mountain Ski Area. In addition, his tireless efforts ensure the continuation of the rich skiing history on the Maine ski scene.”

From their website, Chisholm Ski Club is located at Black Mountain of Maine Ski Area in Rumford, Maine. The Club has a rich tradition which dates back to the early days of the 20th century at its Spruce Street location and its mid 1900’s days at Scottie’s Mountain. Over the years the Club has hosted several world class nordic skiing events, including the 1950 World Championships, 1976 NCAA Cross Country Skiing Championships, 1991 National Biathlon Championships, 1993 US Cross Country Skiing Championships, 1992 USSA XC Jr. Olympics, 1993 U.S. Masters Cross Country Skiing Championships, the first ever US/ North American Womens Ski Jumping championships in 1996, 1996 National Junior Olympics, 1996 Chevy Truck U.S. Nationals, the 1999 NCAA Cross Country Skiing Championship, the 2003 Chevy Truck US Cross Country Championships, the 2004 Chevrolet US Cross Country Championships, the 2009 NCAA Cross Country Skiing Championships, the 2010 USCSA National Championships, and the 2011 and 2012 US Cross Country Championships.

Previous Chisholm Ski Club recipients of the John Caldwell Award include the Chisholm Ski Club itself (2006), Ray Broomhall (2011), and Dan Warner (2016). Another of NENSA’s annual awards is named for Chummy Broomhall, a 70+ year leader of the Chisholm Ski Club, honoring the spirit and dedication of volunteers in our community.

It is a privilege to partner with Roger and all of the wonderful folks in Rumford, continuing the traditions and the legacy the Chisholm Ski Club holds in our sport. Justin Beckwith concludes, “I’m excited to go back to Black, October 22nd for the Maine Event — hope to see you there!”

Roger will be presented with the NENSA 2023 John Caldwell Award at the event.

Congratulations Roger and thank you for the indelible mark you have made on Nordic skiing in New England – and beyond!

Continuing Education and Community Building – Eastern Coaches Conference

Justin Beckwith · September 16, 2023 ·

In two weeks, coaches from around the East will gather in Dublin, New Hampshire for a day filled with clinics, socialization and an opportunity to interact with an expert panel of coach and industry leaders. NENSA is proud to offer opportunities for U.S. Ski & Snowboard certifications, and more importantly provide a space for coaches to gather, share ideas, and learn from each other.

REGISTRATION

We’ve adopted #skiingbettertogether for the 2023-24 season across all of our programming, and the tag couldn’t be more apt for you — coaches — the ones who motivate our community. Your investment in collaborative coaching ensures that athletes receive outstanding experiences, stimulates communication across the region, and make competitive events more inclusive.

Kathy Maddock, who will lead our Introductory clinic, instilling technique advice to Dublin XC skiers.

Recognizing that U.S. Ski & Snowboard certification is only one component of continuing education, we are fortunate to have National Coach Developers offering two clinics as open experiences. This is an opportunity to integrate both coaches who wish to bolster their coaching portfolio and those who want to participate (and support) continuing education. It is our goal to promote certification and celebrate your efforts through exposure to this material, associated lectures and discussion. As awareness, L100 certification is slated to be a requirement for full participation in USSS sanctioned events during the 2024-25 season.

There is also the opportunity to meet and work with our new Youth and Introductory Program Director, Mackenzie Rizio, for Bill Koch Leader Training. Here’s more from Mackenzie!

Bryan Fish, USST Cross Country Development Director (and passionate student of sport), will lead our advanced clinic and share insight into National education.

NENSA’s Coaching Committee has been reinvigorated this summer and we are looking for feedback on how we can better support our community. In CONFERENCE REGISTRATION you have the ability to share topics you would like to add to the discussion or please feel free to reach out to [email protected]

We hope you consider joining us on September 30th!

For folks looking to gain L100 or L200 certifications you should now be able to sign up for the in-person practicums in your USSS online portal — if you are having any trouble with this process please reach out directly to [email protected]
