Wax Policy

Mission Statement

NENSA is committed to making safe and supportive competitive events for all cross country skiers.

As of June 15th, 2020 all NENSA sanctioned events are fluoro free in abidance with U.S. Ski & Snowboard and FIS guidelines.  We thank our competitors and technicians for their ongoing compliance with this regulation, that protects the health of our environment and ensures fair competition.

NENSA Recommendations

  • Simplify your wax boxes – learn a brand(s) and trust your process.  Add complexity as you see fit.  Ski preparation should not limit coaching interaction on race day.  Fluoro free products are now established and differences between waxes are closer.  It is better to focus on effective base preparation prior to the event, rather than extensive testing on race site.
  • Minimize ski, wax and structure testing on race day.  Focus your attention to supporting your athletes and have faith in your ski preparation.  Wax and structure testing should be quick and efficient.
  • Wear a respirator or at least a dust mask whenever you are glide waxing: If you are working with any type of glide wax, there are fumes and particulates in the air that you do not want in your lungs. Even when scraping and brushing, wear a dust mask to protect your airways.
  • Collect your wax shavings and contain your dust: Wax waste must be collected in waste containers and disposed of in waste containers.  All waste material should be disposed of in waste containers on site.  Do not brush your wax scrapings on the ground.

Bill Koch Youth Ski League Policy

Updated 12/2024
In an effort to lessen the cost barrier and to keep the focus more on skiing rather than on waxing at the Bill Koch Youth Ski League  (BKYSL) level, the BKYSL District Chair Committee has voted to only allow basic (entry-level) flouro-free hot wax or liquid paraffin wax at Eastern BKYSL ski races including the Festival.
