Over thirty years in, NENSA is the only independent regional sport development organization in American cross country skiing. In 2024-25, around 9,000 skiers participated in one of NENSA’s year-round races, clinics or camps. The NENSA program has grown to encompass a lifetime of skiing, from the Bill Koch Youth League all the way through to Masters community races. This living archive aims to capture the stories of the people who founded NENSA, those who shaped our history and present moment, and the folks actively creating our future with new visions and ideas built upon our founding principles. We are actively adding to this archive and if you’re inspired to share your story, we would love to hear from.

Remembering John Caldwell
The first human of NENSA whose story we’re sharing here is truly the first human of NENSA, our founding father, John H. Caldwell. As our founder and author of The Cross-Country Ski Book, he made skiing more accessible to beginners and champions alike and helped build the youth and community pathways that continue to thrive today. John was a husband, father, teacher, Olympian, coach, author, and one of the most influential figures in the history of American cross-country skiing. He past away on February 27, 2026, at the age of 97. His life celebrated the importance of family and helped shape the future of a sport in the United States.
