Zoom Presentation of “Race and Sport: Mythbusters Edition”

September 2, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

  • « Learn to Rollerski: Technique Clinic and Rollerski Ramps
  • Mahoosuc Ridge to River Challenge »

Zoom link here. This presentation will be recorded and available at a later date if you cannot attend the live session.

Please join us via Zoom to hear Nicole Ritchie and Akeo Maifeld-Carucci’s presentation Race and Sport: Mythbusters Edition. In this presentation, Nicole and Akeo examine language, stereotypes, and barriers to access to sports in America today. They also spend time looking specifically at the history of rowing and cross country skiing to question how these sports have become less racially diverse than other American sports, and compare this to the history and inclusivity tactics of more racially diverse American sports.

Nicole grew up in Putney VT, and began rowing and skiing at The Putney School. She rowed and skied for Bates College, and then went on to row for Vesper Boat Club in Philadelphia. While in Philadelphia she coached high school and collegiate rowing alongside pursuing a masters in Urban Education. Nicole now lives in Underhill, VT and works with the GRP rowing team at Craftsbury Outdoor Center.

Akeo is a skier who grew up in Bozeman, MT and then spent 4 years skiing for Harvard University and studying engineering. Since college he has skied professionally for teams in Bozeman, MT, Bend, OR and Craftsbury, VT. Like many he has, especially recently, been trying to read and learn about racial equity and the barriers to that in various structures within this country. He is looking forward to sharing some of the connections he has made and learning from the questions and comments from the NENSA community.

All are welcome to listen, learn, share, and ask questions. We hope to “see” you there!
