Dartmouth Skiing: Miles For Racial Justice
August 1, 2020 @ 8:00 am - August 2, 2020 @ 5:00 pm
This event is organized by the Dartmouth Ski Team, but is open to the public for participation. Below is more information about their story, why they are doing what they’re doing and how to sign up.
We, the Dartmouth Ski Team, stand in solidarity with those fighting racial injustice. We condemn the recent murders of Breonna Taylor, Elijah Mcclain, Tony McDade, Armaud Arbery, and George Floyd among many others, and recognize their deaths are representative of a larger system that continues to brutalize Black bodies. Centuries of systematically racist policies have reinforced economic inequality and made skiing an extremely exclusive and white sport. We, as a team, are an immensely privileged group, and have a lot of work to do in addressing the racial injustices that we might perpetuate in any way. This event is just a first step.
Over the weekend of August 1st and 2nd, our team will be biking, running, roller skiing and roller blading towards a collective goal of 1,000 miles. For every mile we bike, we pledge to raise $5. For every mile we run, ski or blade we pledge to raise $10. In total, our goal is to donate $10,000 to the NAACP Legal Defense and education Fund, My Block My Hood My City, and the National Urban League. We ask ski team alums, friends, and family to join us in sweating for good and/or donating! Any amount of miles or money helps. The goal is to get outside of our comfort zone and do what we do best: push ourselves and reflect while doing so. Join us and help us get there!
Who We’re Supporting
We’ve partnered up with Positive Tracks – who is not only supporting our process but also doubling the first $100 raised. Donations are directed to them and then split amongst these three organizations:
NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. “is America’s premier legal organization fighting for racial justice. Through litigation, advocacy, and public education, LDF seeks structural changes to expand democracy, eliminate disparities, and achieve racial justice in a society that fulfills the promise of equality for all Americans.”
My Block My Hood My City: “provides underprivileged youth with an awareness of the world and opportunities beyond their neighborhood. [They] take students on explorations focused on STEM, Arts & Culture, Citizenry & Volunteerism, Health, Community Development, Culinary Arts, and Entrepreneurism.
National Urban League: “promotes economic empowerment through education and job training, housing and community development, workforce development, entrepreneurship, health, and quality of life.”
