First Snow and Membership Reminder

Justin Beckwith · October 13, 2023 ·

The summit of Whiteface Mountain on October 10th.

📷 @newyorkupstate

Only 18 days ago we were standing atop Whiteface Mountain after the Climb to the Castle — good timing one might say for a rollerski event! While Whiteface might be a little ahead due to elevation — seeing white stuff on the ground on the East Coast is certainly exciting for all of us, and a reminder to prepare for the upcoming season and tend to membership renewals. (Don’t forget there are still two rollerski events left: The Maine Event 10/22 in Rumford, ME and the Mt. Greylock Hill Climb 11/5 in Lanesborough, MA).

U.S. Ski & Snowboard just sent out a reminder for the October 15th deadline for renewing members prior to price increases. Read on below for information about both U.S. Ski & Snowboard and NENSA membership details.

The USSS Oct. 15 Registration Deadline is Less Than Two Days Away!

Now is the time to purchase your membership if you haven’t already done so. Simply login to your account and click renew membership in the My Account box. Reach out to membership@usss.org with any questions on your account credentials. As a reminder, all membership requirements must be completed prior to membership activation.

NENSA Memberships renew on May 1 each year and are great to get done at the same time to eliminate unneeded stress once the winter season has begun.

NENSA membership allows you access to Eastern Cup, Championship events, discounted entry in Rollerski and Popular Races, inclusion in Zak Cup scoring as well as a host of other member benefits!

NENSA MEMBER BENEFITS

Most timely — Bulk Uploads of BKL and College Skiers as a Team (for NENSA Clubs) — are available for $25.  Email preston@nensa.net for details.

USSS Personalized Coach Bib Update

Coaches – your personalized Coach Bibs for the season will be shipping soon. The blank bibs are physically housed at the printers. Every Friday U.S. Ski & Snowboard will send a list of all coaches who have completed ALL requirements of their Coach Membership and their mailing addresses to the printer. The printer will then print the last name on the bib and send it to the address provided. If you have completed all membership requirements, but have not received your bib by October 15 – please contact membership@usskiandsnowboard.org to double check your address on file.

USSS Coach Certification: L100 and L200 Hands-On Practicums

Here’s a link to the current calendar of L100 and L200 events that will be hosted in the coming months. Remember that all member coaches will need to be L100 Certified for the start of the 2024-25 Season. NENSA is committed to supporting the USSS Coaches pathway, having offered four certification opportunities this year. We will continue to offer Practicums as requested throughout this winter and next year when course access to USSS sanctioned events will become more stringent. Please reach out to justin@nensa.net for further information.

NENSA will be releasing our 2023-2024 Eastern Cup Primer and Popular Race Schedule on November 1st. We look forward to making this season the best yet and seeing you on the trail!

New Member Benefit: Facebook Gear Swap Group

Mackenzie Rizio · September 14, 2023 ·

NENSA is excited to announce a new member benefit: a virtual ski swap group through Facebook. NENSA members can request access to the group via Facebook or can scan the below QR code using your smartphone or this link. Whether you are trying to find some new-to-you gear for the upcoming winter, or you are looking to free up a little extra space in the ski closet, this page is for you!

The NENSA Member Gear Swap Facebook group is a space for our community to virtually participate in buying, selling, or searching for new or used cross country ski gear much like you would in your club’s annual ski swap. NENSA is the admin of this page, but is not responsible for any transactions that take place through this page. We ask that listings posted to the NENSA Member Gear Swap page are cross-country ski gear only. Any spam or self-promotion will be removed. As always, please be kind to others in our community through any interactions on this page.

Club Liability Insurance Available Under the NENSA Master Policy

Heidi Lange · September 5, 2023 ·

General Liability coverage for clubs under the NENSA Master policy is back. We have worked closely with our provider and are thrilled to be able to restore this community benefit.

A Master policy aggregates coverage for the community, offers better coverage than what clubs may find individually, and saves our clubs the costs of these separate policies. It is a member benefit that we are proud to offer and that we believe will benefit our community directly through the local savings it offers to clubs.

This was officially announced at the turn of the membership year and enrollment activity is now picking up as the fall/winter season approaches. All details can be found at the link below.

Some FAQs

Are clubs required to enroll?

No, certainly not.

What is the cost of this coverage?

NENSA made the decision to cover the cost fully from membership revenue rather than assess clubs an additional insurance premium. It is a member benefit that we are proud to offer and that we believe will benefit our community directly through better Master policy coverage at lower costs; local savings that can be passed along to club members.

How does a club enroll?

The policy requires everyone regularly involved in club activities (skiers, coaches, and volunteers) to be a current NENSA member. Clubs electing coverage must complete a short enrollment form and submit a bulk membership upload.

Is there a deadline for enrollment?

There is no firm deadline and enrollment is happening on a rolling basis. Please keep in mind that processing a bulk NENSA membership upload could take up to a week and this step will need to be completed before the coverage is bound. If you wish to have coverage in place before the start of a new programming season, please keep this processing period in mind.

Free WSCA Membership for Volunteer Women Ski Coaches

Kai Miller · May 31, 2022 ·

The Women Ski Coaches Association (WSCA) celebrates all women who coach, including volunteers who work so hard to keep programs running. To honor all this hard work, the WSCA is extending free membership to all volunteer women ski coaches. If this is you, reach out HERE. If this is not you but you’d like to support the work of the WCSA with a membership, you can sign up HERE.

A little bit about the mission of the WSCA (from their website):

The Women Ski Coaches Association (WSCA) works to develop, retain, and advance women in ski coaching leadership.

DEVELOP EXEMPLARY WOMEN SKI COACHES QUALIFIED FOR LEADERSHIP POSITIONS BY

  1. Recruiting female athletes that exhibit coaching potential

  2. Sharing knowledge, experience, and expertise within WSCA network

  3. Funding professional development opportunities to ensure all coaches have access in lieu of employment status

RETAIN WOMEN SKI COACHES BY

  1. Collaborating with existing organizations to share research and stories that demonstrate why women coaches matter and facilitate a conversation around this challenging topic

  2. Supporting strong female leadership at all levels of sport (local, regional, national, international governance)

  3. Promoting professional standards in ski culture and attempting to change workplace norms that prevent equal opportunity

ADVANCE WOMEN SKI COACHES BY

  1. Connecting women coaches and encouraging mentorship through the WSCA network

  2. Educating employers on the bias women face in the hiring process by teaching people to hire women based on potential

  3. Discussing career goals and providing experience based career counseling within the WSCA network

  4. Stewarding career pathways for qualified women candidates in skiing leadership at all levels (local, regional, national, international) and advocating for women to fulfill crucial decision making positions when hired
