Junior Nationals

NENSA’s Team New England wins the Alaska Cup for the 6th year in a row!

Amie Smith · March 20, 2019 ·

NENSA could not be more proud of Team New England. The depth and team work displayed last week at U.S. Junior Nationals, both with the athletes and the coaching and wax tech staff were nothing short of amazing. Winning the the overall national divisional title at JN’s is such a privilege and and honor. We assume nothing (but certainly hope), and arrive each year to these Junior National Championships and just do our very best. I believe this 6th consecutive win for team New England (and 10th win out of the last 11 years) shows we are doing something right here at NENSA and in our New England region. This win is the sum of many smaller steps ~ that starts at our BKL youth level, and grows into Eastern Cup racing, U16 Championships, EHS Championships ~ they are the stepping stones of development and long range success. Thank you to all the coaches back home, at every age level, as well as the clubs, teams and supportive families. I am always impressed too with the way athletes, coaches, clubs, and teams from four different states that make up our NENSA region come together as colleagues and friends to make NENSA’s Team New England thrive!
NENSA would also like to thank the Nordic Ski Association of Anchorage, for putting on an amazing week of JN racing and fun in Alaska, and to all the race officials and volunteers who worked so hard all week to make it such a success.
We look forward to sharing the Alaska Cup with our NENSA members at different events this coming year, and to defending it again in Truckee CA next March 2020!

Will Solow is honored as the recipient of the Dave Quinn Award at US Junior Nationals

Amie Smith · March 20, 2019 ·

The Dave Quinn Award is awarded each year to one Junior National athlete. Each of the 10 divisions nominates one person, and then all 10 divisional cast one vote. The winner is announced at the final awards ceremony. This year, this honor was bestowed on one of New England’s own, Will Solow, of Heinsberg VT and currently a freshman at Colby College. The Dave Quinn Award recognizes that JN athlete who best exemplifies the ideals of the cross country sport that Dave Quinn expressed thought out his life. In addition to outstanding results, nominees should have special attributes such as love of the sport, leadership, overcoming hardship, worth ethic, etc. which make them unique.

Here is the lovely nomination presentation on Will Solow from his Colby assistant coach, and JN U20 mens coach, Jackson Bloch.

Good evening! I am so grateful to be given the chance to speak about tonight’s Dave Quinn Award recipient, Will Solow. In my one year coaching Will at Colby College, I learned as much about achieving excellence through character and happiness, as I may have ever previously understood. I don’t think Will knows this, though, and that is probably because these traits start with humility. Will never assumes his place in a situation, never takes his position for granted, and from this mindset springs unending gratitude for his opportunities. A grateful person, Will taught me, invests himself completely at every turn because he yearns to make the most of each chance. He doesn’t know when the next one is coming. And when you find yourself completely involved in the present with an uncompromising dedication to seizing the moment, you realize you are both closest to excellence and at your happiest. This is when magic happens. Will’s club coach told me that Will’s dedication to training and his balanced attitude led his team to choose him as captain his senior year, despite their coach never mentioning leadership or holding elections. They initiated it on their own out of respect for him. And after years of trying to make the Junior Nationals team in New England and following a post-graduate year in Sun Valley, Will finally is wearing the blue and green as a second year U20. He has four All-American finishes this week to reward his patience. As a first year student at Colby, Will, and I don’t know if I’m really allowed to say this… and I do know he’ll be upset with me when I do, had a perfect first semester academically.
What I haven’t said yet is that Will has dealt with degenerative hearing loss his whole life. He would never tell you that it affects him, but as his coach, at least, his roller skis seem doubly dangerous and I take extra care when we speak in order to communicate clearly. Like many individuals facing adversity on any scale, the adjustments Will has needed to make have thrown his opportunities into sharper relief, and he consistently uses this awareness to better himself and those around him. His perspective has made him an astonishingly selfless teammate. He has shared his belief that it is important to appreciate the value of skiing towards personal growth first, before considering the results. His dedicated, yet balanced approach, helped steady our team culture this year, which is no small burden for a first year to shoulder, whether he understood this role or not. And for me personally, Will’s integrity and drive is a consistent reminder to be grateful for the chance to squeeze the present for all it offers, regardless, or because of, what stands in the way.

Thank you, and congratulations Will

Junior National Team Heads to Alaska & Staff Preview

Justin Beckwith · February 28, 2019 ·

In the second week of March, a team of 52 athletes will represent New England at the 2019 U.S. Ski & Snowboard Junior Nationals  in Anchorage, Alaska.  These top junior athletes qualified for the New England team through their exceptional results during the season-long Eastern Cup Series, and U.S. Senior Nationals.  Behind the scenes a hardworking staff of 13 will support this impressive contingent of athletes as they defend the Alaska Cup for the sixth consecutive year.  As we ramp up for the racing at Kincaid Park – NENSA is psyched to introduce you to the 2019 NE JN Team!

2019 Junior Rankings and JN Athletes:
U16 Girls
U16 Boys
U18/U20 Girls
U18/U20 Boys

This year’s coach and service staff represents all four states of the New England division and brings together a wealth of experience from regional to international competition.  The staff composition is aimed to promote coach development within the region and provide top-level support to our athletes – whether they are seasoned junior racers or making their first trip to Junior Nationals. This volunteer staff will work together to support a team culture, helping our athletes excel and enjoy the experience of racing at the national level.

2019 JN Staff:

Matt Boobar – Head Coach (SMS)

Amie Smith – Team Leader (NENSA)

Age Group Coaches:

Morgan Wilkerson – U16 boys (Cardigan Mountain School)

Sara Falconer – U16 girls (Mansfield Nordic)

Adam Terko – U18 men (Mansfield Nordic)

Hilary McNamee – U18 women (Dartmouth)

Jackson Bloch – U20 men (Colby)

Savannah Sessions – U20 women (Gould Academy/Bethel Outing Club)

Wax Techs:

Justin Beckwith – Lead Kick (NENSA)

Ollie Burruss – Lead Glide (Craftsbury)

Anna Schulz – Wax Tech (Craftsbury)

Colin Rodgers – Wax Tech (GMVS)

Joe Holland – Wax Tech (St. Paul’s School)

Some thoughts and history about the staff:

Matt Boobar from the Stratton Mountain School, and Amie Smith, Executive Director of NENSA, are at the helm of Team NE for the 5th year in a row. Their leadership and organization – both prior to the trip and on the ground – as Head Coach and Team Leader are a huge part of what makes New England a contender year after year! Both are committed to making sure all the little things go right to give us the best chance to bring the Alaska Cup home again.

Morgan Wilkinson joins us from the Cardigan Mountain School to lead the U16 boys. Besides coaching his team, Morgan has participated in several races this winter and believes in a mixture of motivation and fun. Our ski team came up with a great game this year we call nordic dodgeball biathlon. Imagine dodgeball on skis. When you get hit you have to ski a penalty lap of a predetermined distance. First team to get everyone on the other team out at the same time wins. “Inner excellence is finding joy in what you do and remaining steadfastly committed to your goals, values and dreams.”

Adam Terko, Mansfield Nordic, will be participating in his fourth Junior Nationals as a NE coach. Adam has led the U16 boys charge for the last two years and now will follow some of those same athletes into the U18 age group. “Excited to have the opportunity to continue the success of Team New England, both on the race course and with JNs being a huge part of a young skier’s life. It has been a highlight of my coaching each year.”

We welcome Jackson Bloch from Colby College to lead our U20 men. Jackson brings knowledge (and fitness) from the EISA circuit and his own racing career, “The last time I was part of the New England team we were in Alaska, too! Up in Fairbanks, we were able to stay warm and successfully avoid all the moose on the trails, but we came up just short of the Alaska Cup. I think we could see some good, New England style conditions in Anchorage. The gritty resiliency and serious agility skills developed over years of navigating ice and slush out east should serve us well over there, and I’m wicked psyched to help make your trip competitive and fun.”

Sara Falconer, also of Mansfield Nordic, will lead our U16 girls and perhaps be one of our secret weapons as she is an Anchorage native! Sara has been working with MNC for the last four years, and is, “ familiar with many of the junior athletes that race on the Eastern Cup circuit, as well as the race venue, which is held in my hometown. I am hardworking and fair, and I will do my best to make sure all the athletes have a great time at Junior Nationals.”

We are fortunate to have Hilary McNamee return again this year to lead the U18 women. Hilary is a Dartmouth graduate and the current D-Team Coach. Hilary will share her perspective and positivity with the team.  She has competed on many levels of the racing scene, from Junior Nationals to Biathlon Junior Worlds, and is known for her sprinting prowess. Hilary loves to ski and coach – and always seems to be smiling!

Savannah Sessions joins us from Gould Academy and the Bethel Outdoor Center to lead the U20 women. Savannah was a junior racer herself and has coached the Maine U16 team. She describes herself as, “I am really positive, enthusiastic, and hard working. I love working with young people!”

Colin Rodgers, a Vermont native and national caliber racer, is now the XC Program Director at the Green Mountain Valley School’s Nordic Program.  Colin brings experience and energy to the team and wax room, having worked for years with the Sun Valley Gold Team and US Ski Team on international trips. Colin showed he is ready to put in the km’s testing skis in Anchorage with an impressive 2nd place finish in this year’s Craftsbury Marathon.

Joe Holland will join the JN staff this year for the first time as a part of the service staff – despite 30 years of coaching experience! Joe spent 18 years coaching the Putney School before taking over the St. Paul’s School Ski Team 12 years ago – he has also led the NH wax staff for the past 10 years. “As a science teacher and a team player, I can facilitate testing and help coaches reach consensus about waxes and treatments. I tend to act gracefully and effectively under pressure.”

Ollie Burruss and Anna Schulz, from the Craftsbury Outdoor Center, each join the NE JN wax staff for the second time. While this Nordic power couple has a wide spectrum of experience – including race directing, TD’ing, and coaching – they both have a passion for making fast skis. Fun facts: Ollie will be traveling to Alaska after a trip waxing skis in China, and Anna spent a week this winter in Finland at World Junior Championships helping kick wax the skis that brought the US it’s first gold medal!

Justin Beckwith, the Competitive Program Director for NENSA, is passionate about waxing skis for the talented skiers of New England, and has supported their success at JN’s and international competition.  He fondly looks forward to spending long hours working and laughing alongside our 2019 JN staff in AK.

Go Team NE!!

Ben Ogden awarded the Dave Quinn Award | Will Koch’s U16 Gold Medals Sweep | SMS Male Club Champions | The Alaska Cup returns to New England

Amie Smith · March 13, 2018 · 1 Comment

Four wonderful things happened for Team New England and its athletes, as the US Ski & Snowboard Cross Country Junior Nationals wrapped up on Saturday March 11th in Midway Utah.

First, was the four GOLD medals won by U16 Will Koch (SMS).  Will swept the U16 boys gold medals in all four U16 races this past week ~ the interval Classic 5k distance race, the freestyle sprint race, the mass start freestyle 5k distance race, and finally. the classic 3 x 3.3k team relay.  What an impressive week of racing for this Peru Vermont native who attends the Stratton Mountain School!

Second, Ben Ogden (SMS) – who also had in incredible week of individual results, 2 golds and 2 silvers – was awarded the Dave Quinn Award along with his three teammates from his World Juniors Relay Team, for their accomplishment of winning a silver medal in Gome, Switzerland last February, and for inspiring the next generation of cross country skiers.  Each year the Junior Cross Country Subcommittee presents the Dave Quinn award to recognize that Junior National athlete(s) who best exemplifies the ideals of the cross country ski sport which Dave Quinn expressed through his life.

Third, the Stratton Mountain School, won the Junior Club Award from US Ski & Snowboard, for being the top Male Club Champions at Junior Nationals this year.  Congrats to SMS ~ their coaches and athletes ~ well done!

And finally, New England won the Alaska Cup, for the fifth year in a row!  It was a hard fought win this year, which made it even sweeter!  New England was in 3rd place after the first day of racing, then held on to a narrow margin after day two and three.  We went into the final day of racing, the team relays, with just a 50 point lead – it was anyone’s AK Cup to win.  But Team New England rose to the challenge and our athletes left everything out there on the course, worked as teams, and at the end of the day, we had 9 team medals in all 6 age categories!  At the banquet on Saturday night, Team New England was awarded the Alaska Cup, just 124 points ahead of Rocky Mountain.

I am so proud of New England, and the teamwork between our athletes, clubs and coaches.  It is an incredible pleasure and honor to work with these athletes and coaches, and NENSA is thrilled to have the AK Cup back here in New England for another year!
