The Practice is the Point: Capturing the Eastern Cup Amid a Special Time for New England Skiing

Taking in the final day of the Henchey Memorial Eastern Cup from the timing shed at Craftsbury Outdoor Center, NENSA’s Mackenzie Rizio and Katharine Call echoed the refrain of their old Stratton Mountain School coach Sverre Caldwell:

“It’s all practice, until the Olympics.”

The refrain came back around a couple of different verses. One was from Mackenzie, who was pressed into service as our announcer for the Craftsbury weekend. One was about the Olympics. Katharine’s brother Ben was set to start the Olympic Classic Sprint the next day. On the former, Mackenzie crushed it. On the latter, Ben Ogden won a silver medal and became the first man to win an Olympic medal since fellow New Englander Bill Koch fifty years ago.

It was all practice, until the Olympics. For Ben Ogden, when the first clause gave way to the second in Italy, he earned a silver medal. In the long trail of that first clause though, was “practice.” And for Ben, that practice was everything back here. BKL Festival costume relays, EHS, U16s, and Junior Nationals too. It was NENSA. In his silver medal, the dream which a New England skiing community had worked on over the past half century was realized. But also in an instant, nothing changed at all.

There was still winter. And a good winter too. And for the NENSA community, there was a still a race to be run, literally.

In the time between Bill Koch being the last Vermonter to win a cross country Olympic medal and Ben Ogden being the last Vermonter to win a cross country Olympic medal, there was the Henchey Memorial Eastern Cup at Craftsbury, and the Oak Hill Eastern Cup too.

Any skier will tell you that “practice” has a couple of different meanings. For many skiers right now, it’s the time each day they get together each day. Practice is what comes between the races. Where the pressure is off, and the focus is on events down the line. During practice, you grow stronger to meet the challenge.

In that, is the duel-meaning. Practice as a ritual you return to. Same time, same place. For the NENSA community, the practice we return to each year is the Eastern Cup.

No matter how you splice it – as a noun, verb, adverb, or adjective – “practice” is something filled with humans doing things together. And deconstructing it that way illuminates the contribution of all of us to the ritual. The practice of the Eastern Cup over the past two weeks has required thousands of people who love a sport often hidden away in frozen pockets of the world to go to a certain place, at a certain time, with a certain task, and to do so together. Racers, coaches, volunteers, timers, parents, spectators, shuttle drivers, coffee-makers and SKIERS. In the process, we’ve all accomplished nothing-less than changing a season. Shown that winter can be warm. Enough people with their practice in the same direction can make you shed a few layers.

As Sverre alludes to in his aphorism, practice is always a path looking way down the trail. The Eastern Cup has always been a practice which has looked to make his old saying a vivid chorus for our community. In the past week, with one of his former skiers, it rang true.

With the Eastern Cup, the practice is the point. For Ben O., for Sverre, you, me, and all of us combined. For NENSA. Thank you to everyone who has worked to make sure it’s all practice, until the Olympics.

Join us for the 2026 Tour De Stowe

Kai Miller · January 28, 2026 ·

Join us for a fabulous tour on some of Stowe’s best Nordic trails!

The Tour de Stowe is a non-competitive tour to challenge your endurance.  The course features skiing through the von Trapp Family Lodge trails and Stowe Mountain Resort Ranch Valley system (with some trails that are off the beaten path).  Fuel up with cider and a refreshment stop at the cabin.  BKL/Kids and school team entries can enjoy a supported ski with special treats, and return to the warmth of the Yurt.  Participants are invited to a post-ski gathering in the von Trapp Bierhall with snacks and non-alcoholic beverages. There will be a cash bar offering the award-wining Trapp lager.  Stay for the raffle too!

The hills truly are alive! Skiing, friends, delicious food and a community celebration in the Bierhall are certainly a few of our favorite things and we look forward to seeing you!

Proceeds go to the Stowe Nordic Foundation and will support youth nordic programs in Vermont.

Invitation to High School Skiers: Join in on the Eastern Cup at Quarry Road and Oak Hill w/Intro. Class

Ben Theyerl · January 7, 2026 ·

Dear High School Coaches and Skiers,

Winter has been building and building this ski season. At NENSA, we’re thinking the same way. In planning the Eastern Cup this season, we have been thinking about growth. Getting more skiers, from more places, to join in this quintessential New England ski tradition. The Eastern Cup is a special circuit. NENSA is mindful that the magic of the Eastern Cup comes from skiers, and is making a concerted effort to make the experience more accessible to a broader swath of junior skiers.

NENSA is offering a Introductory Class designed specifically for high school racers to extend their ski season at the Roy Varney Memorial at Quarry Road (Jan. 17th-18th) and Oak Hill Fischer Eastern Cups (Feb. 14th-15th). Each Introductory Class features a 5 k or 7.5 k distance race and podium recognition ceremony. You don’t need to jump through complicated membership systems to race. Just renew your NENSA Membership and sign up!

The introductory races are a designed added opportunity for high school racers to compete with their peers from across New England in a low-stakes, high-energy environment. Whether its a new venue, a new part of the ski community to race in, or another stop in preparing for this year’s NENSA U16 and/or Eastern High School Championships, we hope they’ll come with a positive attitude and a passion for pushing it on snow.

The Crucial Details:

  • Who is this for? – High School racers, especially U16 and EHS skiers, looking for an additional region-wide opportunity without needing a USSS membership.
  • What is it? – A 5 k or 7.5 k raced alongside the sanctioned race day at the Roy Varney Memorial (Quarry Road) and Oak Hill Eastern Cups. Skiers will race the same course on the same day as the sanctioned race field, but receive a separate results sheet and podium ceremony. They do not need a USSS membership to race.
    • Sat. Jan. 17th @ Roy Varney Quarry Road EC – 7.5k Freestyle Ind. Start.
    • Sun. Jan. 18th @ Roy Varney Quarry Road EC – 5k Classic Mass Start.
    • Sat. Feb. 14th @ Oak Hill – 7.5 k Classic Ind. Start. Try it day! Details forthcoming.
    • Sun. Feb. 15th @ Oak Hill – 5k Skate Mass Start.
  • What do you need to race? – No USSS Membership. Just a NENSA Membership, a positive attitude and a passion for pushing it on snow.
  • What about wax support? – Caldwell Sport and NENSA are partnering up to do a community-oriented wax service led by Zach and Amy Caldwell, but augmented with the high school coaches and skiers participating in the intro. class. Details are available on the SkiReg for each Eastern Cup!
