Coaches Update: The NENSA Fall Symposium, and the *New* USSS Coach Cert. System

Ben Theyerl · September 7, 2024 ·

(Photo: George Forbes)

We know there’s a certain type of person, the ski coach, for which the first whiff of Fall that has been in the air around New England this past week came with 2 feelings. 1) The big excitement that winter is on its way, it could snow soon, and teams and kids will be together again. 2) The slightly overwhelming feeling that there’s wax to order, skiers that need skis, training plans that need to be written, and potlucks that need to be organized!

At NENSA, we’re here to try and take care of some of those number 2 concerns so you can focus on that 1 feeling. We’ve been working so that we can get together in the coming weeks to re-connect and prepare so coaches can do what they need to do this winter: inspire, lead, and of course, wax!

Understanding new USSS certification requirements

Questions on the new US Ski and Snowboard coach certification program? We have answers!

NENSA USSS Certification Guide HERE

We’ve developed a guide to the new USSS Sport Education Academy, and with it, the timeline for coaches to be L100 certified in order to participate in USSS races – including Eastern Cups.

All coaches should note the following about the new USSS system:

  • Timeline: All coaches must be in progress towards L100 this season (24-25). All coaches must be L100 certified next season (25-26). This requirement will affect course access at USSS-sanctioned races i.e. Eastern Cups.
  • L100: certification is being offered at the earliest at our Fall Symposium (see below). L200: is not being offered this season, and will be again next season.
  • Assessments: NENSA will be offering additional certification clinics soon. We are pending the training of the new USSS assessment staff to schedule. Please contact Ben Theyerl, ben@nensa.net if you are interested in certification and cannot make the Fall Symposium date.
  • Current Certified Coaches: Coaches certified under the old USSS L100 or L200 curriculum do not have to re-complete the certification process. You will need to continue completing continuing education requirements.

Coaching Resource Updates

Ben Theyerl to Join NENSA as Competitive Program Director

Heidi Lange · May 24, 2024 ·

NENSA is thrilled to introduce incoming Competitive Program Director, Ben Theyerl.

Ben comes to NENSA with strong connections to New England, coaching and community leadership experience, and broad perspectives about sport and athlete development.

A Wisconsin native, Ben connected with the culture and tradition of skiing in the Central region while growing up. He attended Colby College where he studied English, Education, and Environmental Studies and was a member of the Nordic Ski Team. In the years since, Ben has been based in Colorado where he has grown and developed the program at Crested Butte Nordic, provided regional leadership on the board of Rocky Mountain Nordic, and supported U.S. Ski & Snowboard development projects. Along with this regional engagement, Ben has made significant contributions to the broader ski community as an Associate Editor at FasterSkier and Communications Associate with the National Nordic Foundation.

Heidi Lange, Executive Director, is delighted to welcome Ben to the team at NENSA. “Whether engaging with Ben in conversation or through his reporting, his love of sport shines through. Ben thinks critically and holistically about the development of athletes, sport, and communities. The leadership he brings to NENSA is rooted in his experience and insights into our sport at the local, regional, and national levels. Ben brings the passion, organization, communication, creativity, and vision necessary to lead NENSA’s competitive programs and athletes.”

Ben shares, “In the past few years working in skiing I’ve found myself coming back to the refrain of “what is NENSA doing?” which just makes me excited to actively contribute to what I see as an exemplary, and transformative, ski community in New England. I’m also looking forward to working with a lot of old friends, and developing relationships with people I’ve really admired for years as an athlete, coach, and part of the ski community.”

Long-time NENSA Board member Kate Koch reflects, “Ben will bring so much to his role as NENSA’s Competitive Programs Director; he has experienced New England and other divisions, competed, coached, written for Fasterskier, and served our larger ski community through his work with NNF. I know his curiosity and creativity will spark his efforts as Ben jumps into NENSA and continues to build our XC community.”

“Out of a lot of ski memories, I always land back on the American Birkebeiner Trail near where I grew up in Wisconsin,” Ben recalls. “When I was about 12 years old there was a race at “OO” that I did, and then afterwards, my Dad raised the idea of skiing all the way to the Old Telemark Lodge in Cable with a family friend of ours, Tom Meyer.”

“The 20 k up to Telemark was the longest ski of my life at that point, and I just remember it for many of the reasons I uniquely love skiing. The way my Dad and Tom seemed to know everyone out on the trail, the beauty of the Northwoods, and the novel idea that you could race and then just keep doing the sport afterwards, that there was no final whistle or anything. It was the ground from which my love for the sport has grown out of – pushing yourself alongside great people in some of the most beautiful places in the world!”

The Competitive Program Director at NENSA is responsible for overseeing all aspects of NENSA’s competitive programs. This includes managing the Eastern Cup Race Series, Rollerski Series, Zak/Marathon Series, New England Junior National Team, NENSA Elite and Development Teams, and the Eastern Regional Elite Group camp. The CPD advances NENSA’s athlete and coach development pipeline and philosophy by creating resources and implementing development projects.

Ben will be relocating to New England in June and will begin work at NENSA on June 24.

Ben concludes by reflecting, “I think we’re uniquely in a time when every year has seemed more exciting than the last for American skiing, and with the latest “BIG” development being a Lake Placid World Cup in 2026, I think the next year is going to be a great opportunity to start focusing a lot of the great energy in US Skiing towards the East and all the great things it has to offer ahead of us welcoming the world in 2026.”

NTS / NENSA Tech Talk 1.0

Justin Beckwith · January 18, 2024 ·

Andy Newell developed as a skier through NENSA programming, Prospect Mountain and the Stratton Mountain School. He went on to become a 4x Olympian and now shares his passion for sport though coaching the Bridger Ski Foundation Pro Team as well as running Nordic Team Solutions. His impacts on American Skiing are widespread and perhaps the best part about Andy is his love of playing on skis.

One component of playing on skis happens to be cutting edge technique work.

Andy joined forty NENSA coaches last week, sharing insight into new ways to look at technique — and fielded questions from coaches of a wide background.

NENSA will be sharing an edited version of the NTS / NENSA Tech Talk shortly on our YouTube channel (make sure to like:) and Coaches Resource Page. We are thrilled to work with Mr. Newell and NTS and look forward to future collaborations. For anyone on the talk or some who might have missed it, make sure to say hello this weekend at the Lake Placid SuperTour / Eastern Cup.

On Deck: Geschmossel, XC Ski & Snacks, & Nordic Team Solutions – Virtual Technique Talk

Fred Bailey · January 8, 2024 ·

In fits and spurts, winter is making its way to New England. While coastal areas may have the bulk of the new snow, some did fall in the mountains which should see far greater amounts during this week’s storm. With many skiers getting in classic skiing today on fresh snow, it’s the perfect time to look to this weekend’s offerings. Whether you’re a coach looking for excellent technique advice, a racer looking to partake in one of the region’s favorite long-running events, or wanting a guided low key ski adventure, there’s something for you. Gather your family or friends and enjoy the long weekend’s activities! Click on the blue links below for more details.

The 48th Annual Geschmossel Classic Ski Race – 1/15/2024

The Geschmossel is in its 48th year!  This has long been on the NENSA calendar and a favorite of master skiers. This Popular race is a mass start classic on the undulating trails of the Bretton Woods Nordic Center. The long loop and scenery of the venue are spectacular. This event is part of the NENSA Zak Cup and Club Cup Series.

XC Ski and Snacks Tour – 1/15/2024

XC Ski & Snacks Tour hosted by JacksonXC is a casual group event for individuals, friends and families who want to have a little fun on snow and ski to the Cocoa Cabin together. There will be guides to lead groups and help with “break out groups” along the way as skiers’ settle into their own comfortable pace. The turn-around goal is the Cocoa Cabin, making for a 5km round trip.  There will be one “extra credit” group who can ski an 8km (3km extra) round trip for skiers who reach the Cocoa Cabin ahead of schedule.  We will have marshmallows to roast along with cocoa at the Cabin (of course); and each skier will get a carry-your-own snack pack at check-in. Plus we are working on some toasting treats to enjoy at the firepit upon return to the Touring Center.

Nordic Team Solutions – Virtual Technique Talk – Coach Opportunity – 1/11/2024

NENSA and Andrew Newell of Nordic Team Solutions are excited to provide NENSA coaches with a virtual technique talk as we head into the heart of winter. This is a cool opportunity to learn from 4x Olympian, BSF Pro Team head coach and NTS business owner about technique review. The talk includes: “How do you talk to your athletes about technique?  Internal versus external cues.  How to analyze video and what to look for.” This continuing education opportunity is free to all current NENSA members.

The Silver Fox Trot – rescheduled

The Silver Fox Trot has been rescheduled from 1/13/2024 to 2/3/2024, with the event taking place at the newly renovated Oak Hill Trails in Hanover, NH.
