Last weekend, NENSA traveled to the Weston Ski Track to join Eastern Mass. Cross Country’s annual Youth Carnival, a club-wide event focused on fun and skiing. With nearly 200 young skiers participating in short, fun sprint races, the event created an exciting and supportive environment for athletes at every stage of their journey.
Each skier had the opportunity to race in small waves, with time in between to refuel, relax, and enjoy the many festive activities. For many participants, this was their first-ever taste of racing, making the atmosphere especially important.

NENSA was happy to contribute to the day’s energy by hosting two activity stations: a Sticker Design Station and a Ski Limbo Station.
At the Sticker Design Station, young athletes were invited to create their own designs in celebration of the Bill Koch League’s upcoming 50th anniversary, celebrating their love of skiing and expressing their creativity (More to come on this soon!).

These activities fit naturally into the Carnival’s broader focus on fun and community. Alongside racing, families enjoyed music, face painting, hot cocoa, and snacks. The Family Fun Ski, which brings parents, siblings, and coaches onto the snow together, highlighted the powerful role that families and mentors play in supporting young athletes. The leadership and enthusiasm of parents, coaches, and especially junior athletes also played a vital role, offering younger skiers inspiring examples of teamwork, encouragement, and lifelong engagement in the sport.

Events like the EMXC Youth Carnival play an important role beyond regular practices. They give skiers a chance to connect outside of practice, try racing in a welcoming setting, and experience the sport as something joyful and shared with the greater community. This spirit mirrors other beloved regional traditions, such as the Ford Sayre Festivent Relays, where costumes, teamwork, and playful competition take center stage.

NENSA is grateful to EMXC for hosting such a thoughtful and inspiring event and for creating space for young athletes to grow, both as skiers and as members of a vibrant Nordic community. We look forward to continuing to support club-wide celebrations like this one, where creativity, encouragement, and fun are just as important as the race.
